The Movies of 1985
In season 1 we celebrated the 25th anniversary of the movies of 1999, reckoned by many to be the greatest year of movies of all time. This season we’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of the movies of 1985, taking the opportunity to watch moves that we missed in our youth because they were something for the oldies. Now WE’RE the old ones!

It's a twinpeat! Jason and Craig slow down to consider things as the Lynchian drama of Twin Falls Idaho unfolds, bad puns and all, before travelling to NYC to watch Aldi Top Gun as the alpha males of the air traffic control industry duke it out. At least we have our very own Cate Blanchett to admire. Finally, we tune in to the ninth movie night to find out which to films we'll be delving into during next week's episode. Believe it, or not! And see you at the movies.

Join us this week as Jason and Craig return to school (well, Jason at least) to find out what's different with high school dramedies from the nineties. Either it's hyper-real Roald Dahl storybook fantasy or schlock-horror sci-fi mashup with an unlikely cast of characters, from our old mate Shooter McGavin to everyone's favourite host of The Daily Show with Hobbits and Terminators in the mix for good luck. Finally, Wil is trapped in a time loop this week with Phillip Jeffries so listen as he phones in for the ball drop from the coffee pot he's trapped in to find out which two movies we'll be chatting about in next week's show (hint; they're in the Letterboxd list below). Turns out it's gonna be a Twin-Peat after all.

This week Jason and Craig come to an epiphany when talking about Mike Judge's office culture comedy which took them back to the vibe of a late-nineties software consultancy mired in joyless Y2K patching before heading to India to visit Baba the Guru with Kate Winslet and Harvey Keitel in Jane Campion's very different and surprisingly deep psycho-sexual tale of transformation.

Join Jason and Craig once again as we chat about David Lynch's "The Straight Story", a languorous road trip on a lawnmower, this week complemented by a niche Australian rom-com starring Naomi Watts, a long-time Lynch collaborator. And don't forget to hang around for the spinning of the bingo ball as we discover which two films we'll be chatting about next week. See you at the movies!

It's time once again for our double-feature of an A-list and a B-list movie from 1999; this time Craig and Jason sit down to discuss a pair of period dramas, one based on a John Irving classic and featuring far too much snow (the fourth movie so far to be based in a state abutting the Canadian border), while our optional palate-cleanser this week was a Jane Austin chick flick with a bit of a dark underbelly. So grab yourselves a glass of white wine and settle back to listen to two old blokes trying to talk about serious films that tackle serious issues.

Craig and Jason meet one again to chat through American Movie, a humorous and inspiring documentary about the making of Coven, a low-budget horror film, that we watched at last week's movie night. We also talk about The Ninth Gate, a neo-noir supernatural "book detective" thriller, which we watched as an extra-curricular activity during the week. Finally, we cut live to this week's movie night, where we select the most unlikely follow-up to the run of movies we've had so far. Hope you can join us for the ride, and see you at the movies!

Craig and Jason talk about The Iron Giant, the movie we watched on our second movie night last week, followed by Disney's Tarzan, the palate-cleanser movie from Jason's B-list that we watched mid-week as homework. We then cross live to Jason's house for our third movie night to listen in as Dana mixes the bingo ball to select the movie that we'll be talking about on next week's episode. See you at the movies!

Join Jason and Craig as we chat about A Simple Plan, the movie we watched on our very first movie night last week. We also watched Toy Story 2 during the week, another movie from 1999 which didn't make Jason's list of movies on a technicality (it's a sequel). We then cross live to the second movie nights at Jason's house to find out which of the 51 remaining movies we'll be talking about on next week's episode. See you at the movies!

In this, our very first proper episode, Craig and Jason talk about Princess Mononoke, which didn't make our official list of movies to watch due to a technicality. We then cross live to the first of 52 movie nights at Jason's house for the spinning of the bingo ball, to find out which movie we'll be watching this week and talking about on next week's episode.

Listen in as Jason Hutchens and Craig Talbot talk about the background of our year-long project to watch 52 movies from 1999, one each week for the entirety of 2024. In fact, we may watch 104 movies, as I've paired each of my A-list movies with an optional B-list movie. We also talk about the 26 F-list movies which didn't make the cut; the full list of these is available as a Google Sheet.
Finally, we announce that we'll be starting with one movie that didn't make the A-list on a technicality; Princess Mononoke. You can watch the trailer on YouTube and see the list of movies on Letterboxd.
Listen next week to hear our review of Princess Mononoke, after which we'll be selecting the first of our 52 A-list movies to watch in 2024. See you at the movies!
